About Us

As a full-service creative agency, we aim to remedy all our patients’ marketing ailments with the proper doses of graphic design, blend of website development, spoonful of video production, and a twist of photography services for good measure.

Typical symptoms patients exhibit (before being admitted into the Ballistic Arts facilities) are:

  • Frustration from wasting time and money on having a multitude of suppliers work on different parts of their marketing.
  • Paranoia that their competition’s advertising and communications looks better than their own.
  • Hysteria from unreliable suppliers who miss deadlines and constantly come in over budget.

If you suffer from any of these symptoms or are generally having panic attacks you may be showing early signs of “ugly design syndrome”. It is advisable to contact a Ballistic Arts practitioner immediately.

Practicing since 2002, Ballistic Arts is the collective brainchild of creators Takehiro Kawana (aka “Tak”, “Invisible Man”, or “Hey That Guy”) and Theodore Lau (aka “small cap ted, large cap LAU”, “Johnny Nightmare”, or “Hey That Other Guy”).

After somehow completing a degree in Communications at Simon Fraser University, ted LAU roamed the streets of Vancouver trying to solicit business from people. He soon found out that in order to get business, you first need a company with services people want.

Enter Ballistic Arts Media Studios Inc. Along with his equally demented business partner Tak Kawana, Ballistic Arts was birthed in 2002. As a full-service creative agency, Ballistic Arts remedies all patients’ marketing ailments with the proper doses of graphic design, blend of website development, spoonful of video production, and a twist of photography services for good measure.

Like all ADHD-ridden entrepreneurs, ted can’t sit still. So, instead of having him talk them to death at work, his colleagues have put him in community groups. ted LAU currently serves as a Director on the Tri-Cities Chamber of Commerce, and Chairs the Marketing & Events Committee. And because ted likes chairs so much, he’s also the Chair of the Marketing and Promotions Committee for SHARE Family and Community Services Society's Just Desserts Gala fundraiser, and he sits in a chair when he attends IABC Professional Development Committee meetings. Oddly enough, ted stands when giving piano lessons to at-risk youth in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside.

ted married (yes, really), is a black belt martial artist (to protect himself from himself), and speaks 4 languages (sometimes all at once, and none very well). When he’s not talking to himself, ted LAU can sometimes be found on Linked In.

Often times referred to as a figment of ted's imagination for never appearing outside the office, Tak Kawana is believed to enjoy spending his time locked up in the asylum buried in work. His name can be found on a BCIT Broadcast Communications: Television program diploma, which he got at the young age of 19.

Before becoming ted's imaginary business partner, researchers have reason to believe that Tak was obsessed with learning how to make pretty things on the web and started his experiments back in 1996 armed with Notepad and loads of coffee. During his limited excursions into the wild, he shot with up-and-coming professional photographers to hone his own skills. It was this curiosity in all things creative that lead to his part in the creation of Ballistic Arts Media Studios.

His invisibility is believed to be either a mutation from his over-exposure to computer screens and paint fumes (he loves robot models), or perhaps ted is just loud enough for the both of them.

During rare instances when this subject is not being invisible or creative, he may be found buying movies and video games he will never watch or play, cheering on the Canucks, or found trying to get back into the asylum because he just can't stay away. When he gets to work with the great, creative, and crazy people in the asylum, you can't blame him.

ON TEMPORARY LEAVE and will be returning October 2010
Marisa purchased a Bachelor of Arts degree from Simon Fraser University, with a major in Communications, and minors in English and Publishing. Her obsessive-compulsive impulses to organize things and pay attention to very small details brought her to Ballistic Arts, where she was admitted in 2005.

Marisa's OCD is treated with a medical cocktail that includes accounting, administration and website programming.

When she escapes from the asylum, Marisa can be found shopping in a mall, staying active in dance and yoga classes, shopping online, figuring out how to grow a vegetable garden, colour-coordinating her closet, and glued to the couch watching her favourite TV shows.

Ryan or "Ryeguy" has certificates in digital design from both Vancouver Community College (VCC) and CDIS (now The Art Institute of Vancouver). Ryan was admitted into the asylum in 2007 and not only is he the company's graphics genius, he is also the resident DJ playing tunes (he loves his 80s) in our office (his computer is the only one with speakers).

Ryan is a talented designer who can change and alter his style to suit a variety of different projects. This multiple personality disorder makes him the versatile type of designer that Ballistic Arts is proud to have in their asylum.

Away from Ballistic Arts, Ryeguy can be found staying active on a variety of different sport teams such as roller hockey, ice hockey and ultimate. On occasion he teaches toddlers and kids how to skate at a local community rink. Otherwise, he's playing with his Transformers collection. Maybe that explains the multiple personalities...
